Nakhon Phanom Province is located in the northeastern of Thailand; it has a long history influencing the believe, that it is the original center of glory "Kingdom of Sri Krom Bun" in the past. In the early 12th century, the Kingdom was an independent Kingdom, not conquered by anybody. Around the 16th century, Sri Sot Boon has deteriorated its power and fell under the rule of the Khmer empire. Later, in the 18th century, the name of "Si Khor Buri" became a city in the Laan Chang Kingdom, as the capital city by King Krungsri Sattana Khon Hud Laan Chang, who built the city by the Pak Huai Hin Boon (the mouth of the creek joining the left side of Mekong River, opposite Tha Uthen above Nakhon Phanom city) and has inherited the thrones for many more kings.
After moving the city to Pha Mai Ruak, Huai Sri Mung, on the left bank of the Mekong river (the old city southern from the current Tha Kek city), until B.E.2297, King Nakaranurak ruled Sri Kod Boon city, with the opinion, that as the city is no longer located at the mouth of the creek, the name shall be changed to "Marookkanakorn City", because it is built in the bamboo woods, the name Sri Kod Boon has been changed from then onward.
Around B.E.2309, in the period of King Rachakookaew, after defeating King Nakaranurak (Kham Sing), the son-in-law of King, who surrendered to King Chaiyachetthatirat the 2nd (Chao Ong Lor) of Vientiane. He then moved the city across the Mekong River to Pak Bang Huag (The land in Thailand nowadays is the area of Marookkanakorn Temple, Tambon Donnanghong, Amphor Thatphanom, Nakhon Phanom Province) and later in the year B.E. 2321, King Thon Buri graciously ordered Somdet Chaophraya Maha Kasatsuk and Chaophraya Sura Singhanaj attack the cities along the Mekong River, including Vientiane. Marookkanakorn therefore belonged to Krung Thonburi in this era, but still reign by itself. Later, around B.E. 2322 in the era of Phra Barommaracha (Phromma), the city was moved from Pak Bang Huag to Baan Nong Chan (approximately 4 kilometers south from the city of Nakhon Phanom), with the new given name of "Nakorn Buri Ratchathani".
Later, in the year B.E. 2329, His Majesty Phra Bhuddayodfah Chulalok ordered to change the name to "Muang Nakhon Phanom", under the reign of Krung Rattanakosin. The reason for the name "Muang Nakhon Phanom" is assumed to be the fact that this city used to be the main sub-city, it is a city with its history importance, therefore the name "Nakorn", or in other meaning, this "Nakorn" name may preserve the original name, which was "Muang Nakorn Buri Ratchthani", and for the word "Phanom" may be rooted from the Phra Phanom relic located in this city or maybe because of its previous borders which spread to the left bank of the Mekong river, which is the Tha Kek area, with the mountains, until the land of Vietnam, therefore the word "Phanom", means "mountains", was used.
